TTK IP VPN is a wideband virtual private network (VPN) built on the basis of backbone IP MPLS-network of ТТК. This is a fully connected network separable from the Internet at a logical level and supporting private addressing and "each-to-each" data communication. Up-to-date business models based on management of complicated systems of process-linked objects only operate efficiently when they are capable of rapid adaptation to modifications of both external and internal environments. This condition dictates a number of requirements of the service offered on the part of potential clients for the creation and management of enterprise/departmental communication networks. The security level implemented both within the service used and in the entire operator network takes a special place on the list of these requirements. Usage of IP protocol is also an essential condition of enterprise network creation, since most of the modern business applications that are widely used in the clients' networks are developed on its basis. Today, private enterprise networks built on MPLS technology (Multi Protocol Label Switching) may become a central link in the creation of information space that takes all these requirements into account.
With VPN you will accomplish the following tasks:
Creation of a secure enterprise network that supports fully-connected topology ("each-to-each")
High security of information transmission, which complies with the security level of Frame Relay and ATM networks
Integration of different business applications enabled by three service classes, each designed for a corresponding traffic type ("data", "voice", "video")
File and message exchange
Telephony;
Videoconferencing;
Telemedicine;
Interactive distance learning;
Collaboration with documents and databases;
Access to enterprise information http servers.
Service advantages:
For different business applications within the service, ТТК IP VPN supports 3 classes of traffic maintenance which take into account the different requirements of the quality of its transmission via the IP MPLS network: "real time" (for voice/video transmission), "premium" (EDI/http), and "standard" (ftp/e-mail);
ТТК IP VPN is isolated from the Internet at the logical level; security of data transmission complies with the security level of Frame Relay and ATM networks;
The backbone IP network of ТТК complies with the requirements for information security of the Russian State Technical Committee;
A communication network built according to the "each-to-each" scheme easily enables information exchange between remote Customer offices;
Within a single connection to the ТТК IP VPN the Customer may use any business applications: arrange telephony or videoconferencing between offices, enable team work of company workers with documents and databases, etc.;
ability to independently determine the class of maintenance for one or another business application: traffic is marked on the customer's router;
When the volume of transmitted information increases, the technical solution remains the same: it can be easily scaled to gigabit speeds.

TTK Network
The fiber optic lines which run along all Russia's mainline railways total over 76,000 kilometers.
BDCN covers Russia's more densely populated areas and links western and eastern areas of the country. The Backbone Digital Network has over 1,000 resource allocation points in all regions of the country covering 90 per cent of the population and accommodating all Russia's major production facilities. The high reliability of the network is ensured by the reservation of fiber optic communication lines for geographically spread routs and by an efficient operation system for line-cable structures. Connection points with the networks of foreign operators make it possible to create an affective environment for the exchange of international operators' traffic.
We provide communication services using the backbone digital communications network of Russian Railways built and operated by TTK and the MPLS IP network deployed on its basis. TTK also has its own access networks.
SDH technology (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) was chosen as the basic for setting up the backbone primary network to ensure the needed scalability (2 – 10,000 Mbps) in terms of both capacity and zone coverage, and to facilitate the effective operation of optical channels.
The network uses SDH multiplexers provided predominantly by Lucent Technologies. These are capable of multiplexing standard PDH and SDH signals to 2.5 Gbps (STM-16). The wide range of distances covered and high capacity and connection flexibility make the SDH equipment a core component of effective and economical backbone networks. The equipment used with the SDH technology increases primary traffic network reliability by integrating its units into ring configurations. This allows the network control system automatically to switch main the channel to an alternate channel in the case of deviations in the main channel quality parameters from standard. Switching channels on the network takes no more than 50 ms which means there is no user interruption. TTK has implementated DWDM technology into its network. Due to that improvement, the network capacity has grown to 1.6 Tbps.
International operations of Company TTK are based on principles of partnership and mutually beneficial cooperation with all international organizations, operators and companies. TTK interacts with more than 100 global and international operators.
The strategy of Company TTK is developed to meet the demand for the following services:
transit communication channels between Europe and Asia;
international private lines to Russia;
access to Russian and international segments of the Internet
exchange of international voice traffic.
In 2006, Company TTK obtained certificates of conformity of the quality management system for design and provision of telecommunication services to the requirements of ISO 9001-2001 within the national certification system of the Russian Federation and the German system TGA that confirms high quality of services rendered.
Company TTK actively cooperates with international organizations, such as International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Regional Communications Community (RCC), Pacific Telecommunication Council (PTC), International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC), and others.
TTK digital backbone network
Request for proposal
Fiber-optic backbones laid along main railway tracks have a total length of over 53,000 kilometers. In fact, the DBN covers the entire densely-populated territory of Russia, connecting its western and eastern borders. The digital backbone network has more than 1,000 points of resource allocation in all regions of the country where the main industrial resources of Russia are concentrated.
High network reliability is ensured by redundancy of fiber-optic links along geographically distributed routes and established system of line-cable facilities operation.
Points of interaction with operators' networks of other countries (Finland, the Baltic States, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China, and Japan) allow the creation of an effective environment for transmission of international operators' traffic.
DWDM network
Request for proposal
DWDM is a technology that makes it possible to increase the capacity of optic channels by a hundred times.
TTK has upgraded the network on the basis of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology, having created the largest fully geographically redundant DWDM-network in Russia with a total length of more than 30,000 km. Upgraded network capacity was increased by 20 times and now comprises 560 Gbps in the main backbones. Geographical distribution of routes provides complete signal redundancy throughout its length. In case of signal loss, the time for switching to a backup route is 38 milliseconds. This complies with the recommendations of the International Telecommunication Union.
One of the significant benefits of TTK DWDM network is its total homogeneity. Delivery of equipment, installation, and commissioning were carried out by one contractor - Huawei Company (Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.). This ensures optimum consistency and balance of all network elements. The network development project provides the possibility of a subsequent increase in capacity up to 1600 Gbps without transmission interruptions.
The upgrade of the DBN enabled the release of additional resources for process needs of the TTK shareholder (OJSC RZhD), an increase in the scope of modern information technology implementation in the railway industry, and provision of a higher security level for train traffic, and will help to increase the transit capacity of Russian railways. Moreover, the DWDM network enabled TTK to expand the range and quality of its services in the Russian telecommunications market.
IP MPLS network
Request for proposal
The multi-service MPLS IP network created by Company TTK on the basis of the DBN with nodes spread throughout the territory of Russia is the first MPLS network in the country of such a geographical scale and capacity.
The MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) IP-network, based on advanced technology of multiprotocol label switching, was built according to a hierarchical two-tier architecture, which includes a backup layer (core) of MPLS switching of IP traffic and a boundary layer that bears a basic load of subscribers served, and is referred to as the network's main "intellect."
The IP-network core is comprised of high-performance switching routers by Cisco Systems. The boundary layer consists of Cisco Systems routers, which ensure aggregation of IP-network subscribers' client traffic and Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet switchboards for integration of node infrastructure and connection of subscribers' equipment. The IP network includes an equipment and service management system and a set of servers that deliver traditional Internet services such as DNS, SMTP, and WWW.
The MPLS IP network serves as the basis for the most important services offered by TTK – primarily, IP VPN and Internet access.
The up-to-date MPLS IP infrastructure is the basis for multi-service operator and corporate networks, facilitating information communication services and integrating telecommunications and information services.
The MPLS IP network expansion and development of innovative services on its basis is the company's priority.
MPLS Technology
Data is transmitted in VPN via MPLS protocol (MultiProtocol Label Switching), which is responsible for switching IP packages on the TTK backbone network. Safety and efficiency of data transmission is achieved in the network by switching IP-packages containing additional data bytes (Labels) with information on their route. With this technology IP packages are switched rather than routed, which greatly increases the rate of their transmission.
Compared with other technologies, which are used as a basis for VPNs (for example, Frame Relay, dedicated connections, traffic encryption in the Internet), MPLS is the most efficient for IP-traffic transfer, and is therefore the optimum for networking IP-based applications.
Security issues
Increased requirements for information security of IP-services offered by Company TTK are met thanks to:
technology features of MPLS technology;
organizational and technical activities conducted in the backbone IP network.
MPLS technology has a number of technology features that allow the realization of a level of information security that corresponds to the protection level of networks built on Frame Relay technology:
division of address space of different clients' networks;
separation of routing information belonging to different clients;
encapsulation of backbone IP-network core structure;
resistance to attacks such as "Denial of Service";
resistance to attacks based on "substitution" of labels – Label Spoofing.
The high requirements of information security provided by MPLS technology are confirmed by experts:
equipment manufacturers Cisco Systems, Inc., "Security of the MPLS Architecture. White Paper",
Independent expert team Miercom group: "Cisco MPLS based VPNs: Equivalent to the security of Frame Relay. White Paper",
These features are implemented through a special setup of corresponding interfaces of PE-routers, to which clients' networks are connected.
Activities conducted by Company TTK in the backbone IP network to provide the necessary level of security include:
ensuring a high level of physical security through installation of equipment in special facilities with restricted access;
a management system implemented on the basis of a backbone MPLS network and having no interaction with external networks;
an engineering design "Backbone IP network of CJSC Company TransTeleCom" approved by the Russian State Technical Committee as regards data protection requirements;
availability of an Information safety system making equipment management possible only for authorized users and only within their authority and only from a limited number of network devices. Activity of such users can be audited.
work on network attestation for compliance with information security requirements.
